Three reasons why you should love plastic!

Plastic is great. No honestly, no joke. It has great benefits such as:

  1. Long lasting material
  2. Lightweight (in transport)
  3. Endlessly reyclable
So what’s the fuzz about plastic being so bad? It’s the SINGLE-USE that’s the issue.  In light of #meiplasticvrij, an initiative to create awareness around the impact of single-use plastic, we’d like to share some insights.

Let’s start with the bad news:

  1. Annually, an estimated 8 to 12 million tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans worldwide. (Source: UN Environment Programme)

  2. It takes an average of 400 years for a plastic bottle to break down in the environment. (Source: National Geographic)

  3. Only about 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled. (Source: National Geographic)

  4. More than 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die each year due to plastic pollution. (Source: Ocean Conservancy)

You might know the devastating impact on our planet & wildlife by now, but did you know it also has a huge impact on us, humans? It is so important to know why YOU should really avoid single-use plastic as much als possible:

  1. Micro plastics have been found in baby embryo’s, causing damage to human cells
  2. On top, microplastics have also been found in human blood and breast milk
  3. Causes hormone distriuptions & cancers
  4. Enters our foodchain

But there’s good news too:
  1. Many countries have banned or restricted single-use plastics, leading to a decrease in plastic pollution.

  2. There's a rise in alternative packaging materials that are biodegradable or made from renewable resources.

  3. Advances in recycling technology and infrastructure are making recycling more efficient and widespread.

  4. Grassroots movements are cleaning up beaches and rivers, raising awareness, and inspiring action locally.

  5. Many companies and governments are implementing policies to tackle plastic pollution, reducing plastic usage, improving recycling efforts, and investing in sustainable alternatives.

How to fight single-use plastic

One of the main reasons we started MORO is to reduce single-use plastic by introducing refillable glass bottles. Although it might seem like a big effort to change this small habit, the impact of doing so is way bigger. We estimated that by replacing all your bathroom products by refillable alternatives, an average household avoids approximately 80 single-use plastic bottles per year.

Aside from switching to MORO, there are plenty of other small efforts that you can do in order to eliminate single use plastics:
  1. Using refillable household products such as @brauz
  2. Using refillable water bottles such as @paveau_glassware or @dopper_official
  3. Shopping at bulk stores such as @ohne.gent
  4. Carry reusable shopping bags

Together, we can make a difference, one small step at a time.
